Colour & Appearance

Luminous lemon yellow with green reflections – a visual foretaste of the explosive freshness to follow.

Nose

Wild, impetuous and fascinatingly complex. Oscillating between yellow and green aromas: fennel pollen, candied ginger, unripe papaya and freshly sliced persimmon. Then the tart citrus faction with lime, bergamot and kaffir lime. Add to this coriander and fennel seeds, a hint of pea and artichoke. The herbal freshness is positively brutal: nettle, lemon thyme, mint and lemon balm create an aromatic firework display.

Palate

Here the true greatness of this lightweight reveals itself. At just 9.5% alcohol, it moves with enormous lightness of foot, yet is never insubstantial. The phenolics from the 5% whole bunches lend gentle texture and structure. Bitter compounds challenge the delicate fruit and create tension. The herbal freshness dominates for minutes on end – cooling, precise, never sweet. With under 1g/l residual sugar and crisp 7.2 g/l acidity, this is a wine of insane raciness and precision.

Finish

Long, cool, herb-driven. The mineral freshness persists for minutes, accompanied by a fine phenolic texture that gives the wine grip.

Terroir & Origin

The vines thrive in the Rheintal on sandy and loamy soils at 120 metres above sea level. The extreme 2022 vintage, with 110 litres of rain per m² at the end of September, presented Andreas Schumann with enormous challenges – only through meticulous selection could healthy grapes be harvested.

Grape Variety & Vinification

100% Riesling, fermented entirely in stainless steel. The special feature: 5% whole bunches were added – a stylistic device that lends Schumann texture and complexity. Filtered through cellulose in August and bottled with light sulphur.

Food Pairing Suggestions

Perfect with spinach dumplings in buttermilk sauce, chilled cucumber soup with Arctic prawns and crème fraîche or autumn salad with red cabbage, apple and roasted onions. Also excellent with green asparagus, goat’s cheese or Asian dishes with coriander and ginger.
