Wine Description for Sankt Georgen „Aka Serious wine from a Gorgeous place“ 2023 by Moric

Colour & Appearance
Radiant, pale golden yellow with delicate green reflections – a Grüner Veltliner that announces its youthfulness and freshness visually.
Nose
Initially reductive and closed, the wine opens after aeration (best in a decanter) to reveal a complex aromatic profile: quince, pear and yellow apple meet delicate floral notes and subtle herbal nuances. Striking are the mineral limestone notes, which lend this Veltliner a Burgundian character – earthy, precise, profound.
Palate
Floating elegance meets chalky minerality. The pale, juicy fruit from the nose continues on the palate, carried by fine phenolics and vibrant acidity that whets the appetite. This wine possesses substance without heaviness, concentration without opulence – a balancing act that bears Roland Velich’s signature.
Finish
Long, mineral and with a resonance that suggests considerable ageing potential. The limestone notes remain present and leave a saline, appetite-stimulating impression.
Terroir & Origin
From small, old vineyard parcels in Sankt Georgen near Eisenstadt in Burgenland. The limestone soils fundamentally shape the character of this wine and lend it its mineral depth and Burgundian elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Grüner Veltliner, spontaneously fermented and aged in 500-litre barrels. Unfiltered and minimally filtered – Roland Velich relies on natural winemaking that gives maximum expression to the terroir. Ageing in larger wood preserves freshness whilst adding texture and complexity.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This wine demands cuisine with finesse: calf’s sweetbreads in butter, pan-fried turbot, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce, mushroom risotto or aged Comté. Also a delight on its own for contemplative moments.
Special Features
A „cult wine“ from the Moric range that proves Grüner Veltliner can be far more than an uncomplicated terrace wine. With its Burgundian character and considerable ageing potential, this Sankt Georgen ranks among Austria’s most ambitious Veltliners.
