Wine Description for Meursault Sous la Velle AOC 2023 1500ml Magnum by Rémi Jobard

Character
Rémi Jobard, son of the legendary François Jobard, stands for precise, terroir-faithful Meursaults that favour elegance over opulence. His Meursault „Sous la Velle“ from the vineyard site on the southern edge of the village embodies the classic Burgundian signature: mineral-driven, with fine texture and restrained power. The magnum bottle also promises a slower, more harmonious development – a format that grants the wine time and generosity.
Terroir & Origin
The „Sous la Velle“ vineyard site lies at the transition between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet on limestone soils with marl deposits. This geological composition lends the wines that taut minerality and vibrant freshness which distinguishes Meursault from heavier Chardonnays. The 2023 vintage brought, after a warm summer, the necessary balance between ripeness and acidity structure through autumn rains – ideal conditions for long-lived white wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay shows perhaps its most complex, most multi-layered face in Meursault. Rémi Jobard works with natural fermentation in barrels, deliberately keeping the proportion of new oak low so as not to mask the fruit and terroir. The lees work (bâtonnage) is carried out with restraint, favouring wines with taut texture and long ageing potential. At 14% alcohol, the natural ripeness of the vintage shows through without becoming heavy.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Meursault calls for dishes with substance and finesse: lobster in butter, scallops with celeriac cream, Poulet de Bresse with morel sauce or aged Comté. Turbot or halibut in creamy preparations also harmonise perfectly. The magnum size makes it the ideal companion for festive occasions where a wine should accompany several courses.
