Wine description for Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge AOC 2019 from Marcoux

Colour & Appearance
Deep, youthful dark red with luminous ruby rim – a wine that announces its power visually from the outset.
Nose
Impressive aromatic density: black figs, wild blackberries and sweet raspberries meld with blood oranges. These are joined by violets, Provençal herbs, a hint of fresh leather and pepper. As air exposure increases, a fascinating depth and purity unfold – this wine demands patience and rewards it generously.
Palate
Immediately mouth-filling, yet never heavy-handed: silky texture meets impressive concentration. The opulent red berry fruit coats the palate, whilst ripe, noble tannins with a whisper of cocoa provide structure. The fine-grained minerality lends the wine remarkable dynamism and lightness despite 16% alcohol – a balancing act that Sophie Armenier executes masterfully.
Finish
Long, precise and of impressive persistence. The fruit lingers for minutes, carried by a mineral freshness that lends the wine tension and elegance.
Terroir & Origin
The Armenier family’s 13 parcels offer a mosaic of different terroirs: the legendary rolled pebbles on clay-rich subsoil, red sandstone, colluvial sediments and Cretaceous limestone soils. This diversity is reflected in the wine’s complexity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Grenache Noir dominates the blend, complemented by Mourvèdre, Syrah and a touch of Cinsault. Hand-harvested grapes, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, four to five weeks of skin contact. The 18-month maturation takes place predominantly in concrete tanks, supplemented by old wooden vats – a deliberately restrained use of wood that places fruit and terroir centre stage.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Gardiane de Taureau from the Camargue, wild boar terrine with black truffles or a classic Tian de légumes à la provençale – this Châteauneuf demands robust, aromatic dishes from southern French cuisine.
Special Characteristics
A Châteauneuf of extraordinary ageing potential that, despite its concentration and power, never comes across as ponderous. Sophie Armenier’s gentle vinification creates a wine of great purity – interpreted in a modern style without betraying tradition.
