Wine description for Mâcon-Villages “Terroirs du Mâconnais Bis” AOC 2024 by Bret Brothers

Character
A Chardonnay of refreshing directness and artisanal clarity. Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret know their craft: the wine displays the varietally typical fruit of the Mâconnais without any superfluous weight – juicy, lively, with that unassuming elegance that makes this southern corner of Burgundy so appealing. No heavy oak, no cosmetic interventions – just the pure essence of sound vineyard work.
Terroir & Origin
The Mâconnais forms the southern gateway to Burgundy, where Chardonnay on limestone soils reveals a particularly accessible, fruit-driven side. The Bret brothers, deeply rooted in this region through their Domaine La Soufrandière in Pouilly-Vinzelles, source their grapes from growers practising organic or biodynamic viticulture. This commitment to sustainable farming is reflected in the wine’s purity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
In the Mâconnais, Chardonnay prioritises freshness over richness. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified in Vinzelles according to the same principles the brothers apply to their Beaujolais wines: spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, gentle maturation without cosmetic adjustments. The result is a wine that expresses its origin with utter transparency – offering notes of citrus fruit, white flowers and a fine mineral tension.
Food Pairings
Its moderate alcohol level and vibrant acidity make this wine a versatile companion at the table. It shines alongside regional goat’s cheese, pan-fried sole or chicken in tarragon cream sauce. It also comes into its own with vegetable quiches or simply with a young Comté: it supports without dominating.
