Wine Description for Mâcon-Igé Climat „Les Vernayes“ AOC 2024 by Bret Brothers

Colour & Appearance
Intense, medium golden yellow – a Chardonnay that visually reveals its substance and barrel ageing.
Nose
Beguilingly complex: ripe pear and apricot meet orange zest, whilst freshly churned butter, vanilla and praline testify to the oak maturation. Surprising notes of leather and café au lait add depth, whilst fragrant blossoms provide a feminine, elegant counterpoint.
Palate
Here the full class of the terroir reveals itself: juicy and compact, yet playful and finesse-driven. A saline, mineral seam runs through the wine with impressive intensity, pointing unmistakably to the limestone-rich subsoil of Igé. The wine masterfully balances Burgundian opulence with cool precision – already accessible after sufficient aeration, but clearly built for the future.
Finish
Long, mineral and carried by saline freshness. The fruit lingers without dominating – a finale that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The parcel in the village of Igé benefits from healthy, fertile soil with a high limestone content, which lends the wine its characteristic minerality and tension.
Grape Variety & Vinification
20 to 30-year-old Chardonnay vines, hand-harvested from 17th-20th September 2024. 100% barrel ageing with wild yeasts, unfined and with minimal sulphur addition. A purist, terroir-focused vinification that places the character of the place in the foreground. Production: 8,273 bottles.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine demands intense flavours: lobster with saffron sauce, veal sweetbreads in morel sauce, baked pike-perch with tarragon butter or aged Comté. Spice-rich dishes such as coq au vin jaune are ideal.
Special Features
A Mâcon with serious ageing potential – Bret Brothers prove that great Burgundies need not necessarily come from the Côte d’Or. A wine for the patient, but one that also brings pleasure when young.
