Wine Description for La Pierre Noire AOC 2019 by Saint Jean Du Barroux

Colour & Appearance
Garnet red with a subtle, promising transparency – a wine that signals elegance through its depth, even before it leaves the glass.
Nose
The 2019 La Pierre Noire is arguably the most refined vintage of this cuvée. The nose presents itself noble and cool: flint and sloe dominate, accompanied by blackberries, crisp plums, ripe cherries and a subtle hint of black olive. Herbal nuances and a palpable mineral coolness lend the wine a polish that sets it distinctly apart from the warmer, riper-fruited previous vintage.
Palate
On the palate, a wine of impressive complexity unfolds. The southern fruit depth is undoubtedly present – the body robust and mature – yet the true character is defined by a cool, mineral vein. Iron, graphite, fermented cardamom and dark, dry tobacco form the backbone. The tannins are firm and structured, the acidity clear and precise. A wine that literally tastes of black stone.
Finish
Long, mineral and with remarkable freshness. The tannins carry the finish without imposing – a promise of a great future.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from black stone in the southern Rhône Valley, a terroir that imparts the wine’s unmistakable mineral character. The extreme yield reduction to just 15 hectolitres per hectare speaks to the Domaine’s uncompromising quality orientation.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A cuvée of approximately 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah, spontaneously fermented – including stems and stalks – over 15 days. Ageing takes place in concrete, enamelled tanks and used large wooden casks. According to winemaker Philippe Gimel, this wine possesses an ageing potential of up to 20 years.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine for the grand table: braised lamb shoulder with Provençal herbs, wild boar ragout or a classic Bœuf en daube. Also a delightful pairing with aged hard cheese such as a robust Comté.
Special Characteristics
With an alcohol content of 15.0% Vol. and yet perceptible freshness and minerality, this wine proves that the southern Rhône can deliver far more than opulent warmth. The 2019 La Pierre Noire is a wine that rewards patience – and changes convictions.
