Wine description for Grüner Veltliner Nussberg 2025 by Hajszan Neumann
- Colour & appearance
- Pale straw yellow with bright, slightly greenish reflections.
- Nose
- Clear, precise and light-footed: Nashi pear, ripe pear and Cantaloupe melon, accompanied by a hint of passion fruit and mirabelle plum. Behind this lies a complex herbal spiciness – chervil, lemon balm, lemon thyme, lemongrass and fresh mint – which almost evokes Southeast Asian associations. Fine white pepper marks the typical Veltliner spice, complemented by vegetal notes of turnip, fennel and young peas.
- Palate
- Enormously juicy, slender and precise. Alongside the bright pear and melon fruit emerge yellow and red apple; fine tart accents and subtle bitter compounds provide drive and tension. Despite its lightness, the wine possesses remarkable inner density and depth – a wine that stimulates thirst rather than quenching it. Crisp 6.7 g/l acidity on a dry base: pure tension.
- Finish
- Long, bright and precise, with fine minerality and clear vineyard character. The aromatic profile remains present right through to the finale – esprit, charm and summery lightness.
- Terroir & origin
- From two parcels in the Weissleiten vineyard site, a cooler section of the larger Nussberg area in Grinzing. Around ten million years ago, this formation formed the coastline of the Pannonian Sea; today, weathered limestone formations with shell limestone and massive bedrock limestone in the subsoil define the terraces. Vienna is one of the few capital cities worldwide with vineyards within its city limits.
- Grape variety & vinification
- Grüner Veltliner, farmed biodynamically (certified respekt-BIODYN). After harvesting, the grapes undergo a short maceration of around three hours; the individual batches mature on their fine lees before the final assemblage. Vinified dry, 12.5% abv.
- Food pairings
- The herbal, almost Thai-inspired aromatic profile calls for Vietnamese summer rolls, green papaya salad or steamed fish with lemongrass. Classically, it pairs well with Wiener Schnitzel and potato salad, as well as asparagus, pea risotto or young, mild cheeses.
- Special features
- Hajszan Neumann is Fritz Wieninger’s experimental playground on the Nussberg – the counterpart to the classic Weingut Wieninger. Farmed biodynamically since Stefan Hajszan’s pioneering conversion in 2006, wines with character, edge and a clear signature are created here. This Veltliner displays the rare combination of lightness and inner density – a single-vineyard wine that already offers great pleasure today and will gain complexity over the years.
