Wine Description for Gelber Muskateller „Sand & Schiefer“ Südsteiermark DAC 2025 by Tement

Character
Tement is one of the defining estates of South Styria and has created a Gelber Muskateller with this wine that unites two geological worlds. The wine’s name „Sand & Schiefer“ is programmatic: the grapes come from vineyard sites with different soil formations that lend the wine both lightness and fruit as well as minerality and tension. The result is a dry, aromatically expressive Muskateller with characteristic varietal typicity and the precision typical of Tement.
Terroir & Origin
South Styria is the heart of Austrian white wine culture, characterised by steep hillsides, a Pannonian-Mediterranean climate influence and an extraordinary diversity of soils. The combination of sandy sediments and slate weathering soils creates ideal conditions for aromatic grape varieties such as Gelber Muskateller. Whilst the sand provides elegance and bouquet, the slate brings structure and a fine mineral texture. Tement manages its vineyards with great respect for this diversity and allows the terroir to shine through clearly.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The Gelber Muskateller – also known as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains – is one of the oldest cultivated grape varieties in the world and has been native to South Styria for centuries. The variety impresses with its intense grape aroma, reminiscent of rose petals, elderflower and fresh grapes. Tement vinifies the wine dry and with a restrained hand to avoid masking the natural aromatics. The wine is aged in neutral vessels, often in stainless steel tanks, to preserve freshness and primary fruit – a style that reflects the philosophy of the house: clarity before effect.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A classic companion to Styrian charcuterie boards, to asparagus in all its variations or to fried pike-perch. The aromatic fullness harmonises beautifully with Asian cuisine, such as Thai summer rolls or sushi. Also an excellent choice with goat’s cheese and fresh herb salads.
