Wine description for Fixin „Champs de Vosger“ AOP 2023 by Jérôme Galeyrand

Character
Fixin is regarded as the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits – a village that stands in the shadow of its famous neighbours Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay, yet possesses an unmistakably serious, structured personality. Jérôme Galeyrand, a winemaker known for his consistently artisanal and nature-respecting approach, captures the raw elegance of Fixin with this single vineyard wine: a Pinot Noir that relies less on immediate seduction than on depth, tension and longevity.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site „Champs de Vosger“ lies at the heart of the Fixin appellation, nestled in the characteristic limestone and clay-rich soils of the Côte de Nuits. The terroir is shaped by a cooler exposure that lends the wine natural freshness and vibrancy. The vintage 2023 was marked in Burgundy by exceptional warmth and early ripeness – a challenge that in experienced hands can lead to wines with ripe fruit whilst maintaining acidity structure. Fixin is not a wine for the impatient; the terroir demands time.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir is traditionally of more robust character in Fixin than in some other villages of the Côte de Nuits – with dark fruit, firm tannin structure and an earthy, mineral depth. Galeyrand works in the vineyard and cellar with the utmost respect for the raw material: organically farmed vineyards, restrained use of sulphur and an ageing process that allows the terroir to speak without being overwhelmed by excessive oak. The alcohol content of 13.5% vol. points to a balanced, not over-ripe style.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine demands dishes with substance and character. Braised beef cheeks or a classic Bœuf bourguignon are ideal companions. It also harmonises beautifully with grilled entrecôte, game dishes such as venison haunch or a mature Époisses from the neighbouring region. If drinking it young, one should decant it generously – or better still: exercise patience for a few years.
