Wine Description for Fixin „Champs de Vosger“ AOP 2021 by Jérôme Galeyrand

Colour & Appearance
Medium garnet red, clear and luminous – a classic Burgundy red that places elegance before power.
Nose
Precise and multi-layered: wild strawberries meet forest floor and undergrowth, accentuated by zesty blood orange. This combination of sweet fruit, earthy depth and fresh citrus note reveals the characterful Pinot Noir in its Burgundian purity.
Palate
The attack surprises with dark fruit and charming extract sweetness, juicy and inviting. The vibrant acidity dominates initially – typical for the youthful 2021 – and is accompanied by dark spicy notes. Towards the finish, an increasing dryness develops, whilst liquorice rounds out the aromatics.
Finish
Medium length with persistent spice and fine tannin structure. The acidity remains present, yet promises good ageing potential.
Terroir & Origin
From the vineyard site Les Champs de Vosger below Fixin, characterised by light, sandy soils. The 70-year-old vines from massale selection lend the wine genetic complexity and depth – a treasure of Burgundian winemaking culture.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir, farmed organically and biodynamically. Largely destemmed and fermented in tanks, aged for twelve months in used 228-litre oak barrels. Jérôme Galeyrand works with indigenous yeasts, eschews fining and enzymes, minimises SO₂ – a natural approach that lets the vineyard speak.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The earthy spice harmonises beautifully with roasted aubergines with tahini, the acidity structure carries pointed cabbage and potato gratin with Gruyère. Also an excellent choice with spiced rice with lamb and garlic yoghurt – the wine handles bold flavours well.
Special Characteristics
An honest, artisanal Fixin that worthily represents the often underestimated appellation at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits. Still youthfully taut, it will unfold its full harmony in 2-3 years. Galeyrand proves that great Burgundies need not always come from the most famous vineyard sites – 13.5% alcohol moreover demonstrates pleasing restraint in times of climate warming.
