Tasting note
Character
A Nuits-Saint-Georges of rare directness: dark berry fruit, a touch of pepper and a firm, fine-grained tannin that carries the wine without weighing it down. At a moderate 12.5% vol., the 2023 stays remarkably cool and juicy. You can tell that almost nothing was done to this wine in the cellar: the fruit feels unrestrained, the finish is long and precise.
Terroir & Origin
The parcel “Les Langecourts” lies in Nuits-Saint-Georges, and 2023 is the first vintage Pierre-Henri Rougeot has made from it, probably also the only one. The grapes are organically grown and the wine carries the EU organic logo. Like almost everything under his own label, the cuvée was made in a tiny quantity: for these wines he exchanges grapes with friendly growers who are certified organic or biodynamic.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, fermented with 100% whole bunches. After around ten days on the skins, the wine matures for about 18 months in barrel, a quarter of the barriques new. Fermentation starts on its own and no sulphur is used during fermentation or ageing; whether a small dose goes in at bottling, Rougeot decides barrel by barrel. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Food Pairings
The dark fruit and firm structure can take robust cooking: pink-roasted duck breast, beef fillet or a classic jugged hare are ideal partners. It also cuts an excellent figure with Bœuf Bourguignon or a more mature Comté.
