Wine Description for Côte Rôtie „Les Binardes“ AOC 2023 by Maison Stephan

Colour & Appearance
Deep, dense violet with youthful intensity – a wine that reveals its heritage from old Syrah vines already in the glass.
Nose
Complex and spicy: dark blackberries, plums and blackcurrant meld with blueberries and fine notes of liquorice and violets. The 10% Viognier lends the bouquet a subtle floral elegance, without pushing itself to the fore.
Palate
Remarkably fresh and juicy for a Côte Rôtie – here the cool signature of Maison Stephan reveals itself. Plenty of violet fruit without heavy oak notes or meaty undertones, instead a hint of olive tapenade and a wonderful minerality stemming from the granite and gneiss soils. Silky, balanced, expressive – a Syrah with finesse rather than power.
Finish
Elegant and lingering with fine spice and mineral aftertaste. The restrained 12.5% alcohol underscores the drinking pleasure.
Terroir & Origin
From the legendary Côte Blonde below Tupin: terraced vineyards on granite, quartz and orthogneiss. The vines were planted between 1986 and 1994 through sélection massale – organically farmed, hand-harvested.
Grape Variety & Vinification
90% Syrah, 10% Viognier. Semi-carbonic maceration, gentle pressing, 12 months ageing in barrels. Bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphites – pure expression of terroir.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Lamb rack with herb crust, beef steak with black olives, duck breast with plums, aged Comté or tapenade on toasted bread.
Special Features
A natural wine in the truest sense: without oenological tricks, with respect for terroir and tradition. The low alcohol content and vibrant freshness make this 2023 already approachable now – a Côte Rôtie that places elegance above opulence.
