The 2019 vintage offered a long ripening period on the vine in sunny autumn weather and yielded only a small quantity of grapes, which were of exceptional quality. The Castel Campan is a blend of 65% Cabernet franc and 35% Merlot. The Merlot grows in the Tatzenschrot vineyard on Manincor, a south-eastern slope at 250 metres above sea level, is planted with the oldest Merlot vines and is one of the hottest sites in South Tyrol. The Cabernet franc comes from Seehorf, where it develops its dark fruity power on loamy chalky gravel. The maceration took place spontaneously in a large wooden vat and lasted four weeks before it was matured for 20 months in half new barriques.
Color
Dark purple with violet reflections and black core.
Nose
Manincor's 2019 Castel Campan smells impenetrably dark and needs some air before its initially monolithic nose fragments into individual aromas. Then, under the black blanket of dark Criollo chocolate, red and black fruits such as cherries, blackberries, mulberries and damsons sparkle, their juicy fruit flavour tempered by dark spices such as black pepper, cardamom and dark tobacco.
Mouth
Super juicy with full fruit ahead, it is also controlled on the palate by ripe, dark fruit of cherries, blackberries and plum jam. Contoured by youthful leafy tannin, it has a grippy texture and is carried by the wide-stretched and well-integrated acidic nerve. Plush, dark-fruited and velvety in nature, it combines uncomplicated drinking pleasure with serious craftsmanship.
