Wine Description for Blanc de Noir Sekt Brut Nature 2019 by Bertram-Baltes

Colour & Appearance
Radiant straw yellow with pale, greenish reflections. The perlage displays fine, delicate small bubbles, the mousse fades quickly – a hallmark of classic bottle fermentation without dosage tricks.
Nose
Subtle and characterised by cool finesse. The fruit deliberately takes a back seat to mineralic notes of wet stones after summer rain. A herb garden unfolds: oregano, sage, mint, alongside more intense sorrel and lemon balm. Discreet sour raspberries and redcurrants and whitecurrants, accentuated by fennel seed, coriander and white pepper. A fine smoky note rounds off the complex bouquet.
Palate
Assertive and robust – here winemaking and provenance dominate over approachable fruit. The attack reveals the creaminess of 36 months on the lees, but then a razor-sharp acidity takes over. Consistently earthy and mineralic, with a saline finish that underscores the herbal spice. A sparkling wine for purists, which prioritises terroir over palatability.
Finish
Long and acidity-driven, with shyly returning tart fruit. The herbal aromas set the louder accents and linger on.
Terroir & Origin
From the Ahr, that region which is rising again after the flood disaster of 2021. The grapes come from pre-selections within large vineyard sites – a deliberate selection that prioritises quality over quantity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Spätburgunder, pressed immediately after harvest in a basket press and spontaneously fermented. The base wine aged for one year in used 500-litre German oak barrels. After the second fermentation, 36 months on the lees. Disgorged in November 2023. Brut Nature – without dosage, uncompromisingly dry.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Cured char with dill yoghurt, salad of green beans and peas with mint, roasted celeriac with basil pesto and Parmesan. This sparkling wine demands dishes that echo its herbal spice and minerality.
Special Features
A Blanc de Noirs for connoisseurs who appreciate cool finesse over opulent fruit. At just 11.5% alcohol elegantly restrained, yet full of character. The signature of Julia Bertram and Benny Baltes is unmistakable.
