Wine Description for Ambre Orange Gewürztraminer Maceration AOC 2022 by Trapet Alsace

Character
An orange wine of distinctive personality: The Ambre from Trapet Alsace is not a wine for compromise. The skin maceration lends it structure, depth and that characteristic amber colour which gives the wine its name. With 14.5% vol. and a dry style, it displays the full ripeness of the 2022 vintage – powerful, yet marked by the artisanal seriousness that has distinguished the Trapet estate for years.
Terroir & Origin
Alsace is one of France’s most distinctive wine regions: wedged between the Vosges and the Rhine, with one of the driest and sunniest microclimates in the country. The 2022 vintage was characterised by warmth and early ripeness – ideal for the aromatic expression of Gewürztraminer, but also a challenge for winemakers seeking freshness and balance. The Trapet Alsace estate, managed according to the principles of biodynamic viticulture, relies on living soils and minimal intervention in the cellar as the foundation for authentic expression.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Gewürztraminer is considered the most opulent, most extroverted grape variety of Alsace – renowned for rose blossom, lychee and exotic spice. In its maceration variant, however, this picture changes fundamentally: through prolonged skin contact, tannins, phenolic structure and complexity are gained, lending the variety an unusual austerity and ageing potential. The floral exuberance recedes; in its place comes an earthy, spicy depth. A deliberate counterpoint to the conventional interpretation of this variety.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The tannin structure and dry style open unexpected pairing possibilities. Recommended with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Münster, with braised poultry dishes featuring oriental spices, with mole sauces or robust Asian cuisine such as Thai curry or Peking duck. Also a worthwhile choice as a standalone aperitif for the curious palate.
