Wine Description for Monte Mare Rouge VdF 2022 by Abbatucci
- Colour & Appearance
- Transparent, radiant ruby red – clear and luminous in the glass, without the slightest cloudiness. A wine that speaks of precision and purity from the very first glance.
- Nose
- The nose is brimming with unbridled vitality: morello cherry, cornelian cherry and redcurrant burst from the glass like a volley of red fruit. Above this shimmer floral notes of violet and lilac, almost ethereally delicate. In the depths lurks a dark, Mediterranean spice – juniper, allspice, white pepper with a citric accent. An aromatic profile of wild beauty and unmistakably Corsican character.
- Palate
- The palate is entirely dominated by the extraordinary tannin structure of Sciaccarellu: fine-knit, powdery-soft, almost silky – as if the wine were lining the mouth with precious raw silk. The fresh acidity holds the framework in balance and lends the wine its remarkable transparency. The red fruit integrates itself without dominating – it serves the structure, not the other way around. Ethereally cool on the finish, with an elegance one simply doesn’t expect at 15% alcohol.
- Finish
- Long, fruit-driven and with cathedral-like resonance. The fine tannins linger, the spice remains, the freshness carries through. A finish that doesn’t let go.
- Terroir & Origin
- Domaine Comte Abbatucci manages 21 hectares on the granite soils of Corsica – a terroir of mineral austerity and Mediterranean warmth. Biodynamic viticulture according to Demeter standards is not a marketing promise here, but a lived conviction spanning decades.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Sciaccarellu – one of Corsica’s great indigenous varieties, which Abbatucci rescued from obscurity in the 1960s and 70s. Since French AOC regulations restrict its use, the wine is marketed as Vin de France – a classification that in no way does justice to its quality.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The silky texture and Mediterranean spice make this wine a versatile companion: roasted lamb shoulder with grilled tomatoes and aubergine cream is the classic reference. Equally convincing with grilled beetroot with goat’s cheese and charcoal oil vinaigrette or – unconventional, yet harmonious – with whole turbot from the grill with ratatouille.
- Special Features
- A wine that proves Vin de France is no blemish, but sometimes a free pass to the extraordinary. Abbatucci is the custodian of a vinous heritage that sets Corsica apart from all other wine regions of France – and the Monte Mare Rouge 2022 is its most eloquent witness.
