Wine Description for Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd Dry 2006 by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Deep golden yellow with amber reflections – the maturity of almost two decades is evident in the depth and intensity of the colour. Brilliant clarity despite its age.
Nose
Fascinatingly complex: ripe apricot and candied citrus fruits meet petrol notes, characteristic of aged Riesling. Beneath this, honey, roasted hazelnuts and a fine minerality reminiscent of wet slate. A hint of beeswax and dried herbs rounds out the bouquet.
Palate
Surprisingly fresh and lively for its age. The 13% alcohol is perfectly integrated into a taut, almost crisp acidity structure that gives the wine tension. Ripe stone fruits, mirabelle plum and quince dominate, underpinned by saline minerality. Remarkable is the balance between maturity aromas and youthful freshness – a testament to the exceptional quality of the vintage and biodynamic viticulture.
Finish
Long, precise and characterised by electrifying minerality. The acidity carries far, leaving a saline, almost smoky aftertaste with hints of flint and lemon zest.
Terroir & Origin
The Vom Stein vineyard site in the Wachau is among Austria’s most outstanding terroirs. Steep terraces on weathered primary rock soils define the mineral character. Nikolaihof has managed these parcels according to biodynamic principles for decades (Demeter-certified), which is reflected in the wine’s vibrancy and expressiveness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling in its purest form. The Smaragd classification stands for fully ripe grapes and dry vinification. Spontaneous fermentation and ageing in traditional wooden barrels without fining or filtration.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pan-fried turbot with butter sauce, veal brisket with apple horseradish, mature Comté or Gruyère, scallops with caramelised fennel, or classically with Wiener Schnitzel.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a wine that demonstrates that great Wachau Rieslings can easily age for two decades and beyond. The biodynamic viticulture of the traditional Nikolaihof estate lends this Smaragd additional depth and vitality.
