Wine description for Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd dry 2006 by Nikolaihof
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, deep golden yellow with amber reflections – a Riesling that wears its nearly two decades of maturity with pride. Brilliant clarity in the glass, testament to perfect cellar storage.
- Nose
- A fascinating kaleidoscope of mature aromas: petrol and beeswax mingle with candied citrus fruits, dried apricots and a hint of honey. Beneath lie mineral notes of wet stone and flint, evoking the primordial rock terraces of the Wachau. With air, nuances of dried herbs and white pepper emerge.
- Palate
- Impressive structure for an 18-year-old Riesling. The acidity remains vibrant, perfectly integrated and carries concentrated aromas of ripe stone fruit, quince and orange zest. On the mid-palate, an oily, almost creamy texture unfolds – typical of mature Smaragd Rieslings – whilst the mineral precision of the Vom Stein terroir remains palpable throughout. Despite 13% alcohol, the wine feels elegant and balanced, never heavy.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineral and vibrant. The petrol notes return, accompanied by a fine bitterness of grapefruit pith. A wine that resonates for minutes.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Vom Stein vineyard site ranks among the Wachau’s premier locations, characterised by weathered primordial rock and steep terraces directly overlooking the Danube. The cooler microclimate preserves racy acidity, whilst the stony soils provide mineral depth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling from the biodynamically managed Nikolaihof, one of Austria’s oldest wine estates. Smaragd represents the Wachau’s highest quality tier – powerful, dry wines with ageing potential. Spontaneous fermentation and traditional maturation without manipulative intervention.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Pan-fried turbot with butter sauce, calf’s sweetbreads with morels, aged Comté or blue cheese. Also excellent with truffle-based dishes or simply on its own as a meditative drinking experience.
- Special Features
- Archive Release 2024 – a rare glimpse into the extraordinary ageing potential of biodynamic Wachau Rieslings. The wine is at its peak, yet can hold for several more years.
