Wine Description for Ried Heiligenstein Riesling 1.ÖTW 2022 from Loimer
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous golden yellow in the glass, which already announces visually the maturity and concentration of this great Riesling.
- Nose
- A deep, multi-layered Riesling of impressive complexity. The nose reveals candied lemons and lemon curd, along with orange zest and baby pineapple. Behind these unfold white stone fruits, ripe pears as well as fine herbal notes of verbena and dill. The mineral component shows itself in hints of cool stone and lanolin – an aromatics that unites elegance with substance.
- Palate
- On the palate, the full class of this vineyard site unfolds: wonderful depth, density and fullness in the mouth with fine extract sweetness and magnificent substance. A mature Riesling with many layers between fruit, spice and creaminess. The acidity is mature yet clearly defined, the prickling minerality lends the wine tension and precision.
- Finish
- Long and expressive with the finest blackcurrant, floral, citrus and stone fruit aromas. The aftertaste shows the perfect balance between maturity and freshness.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Heiligenstein is the most legendary Riesling vineyard site in the Kamptal – a south and south-west facing terraced vineyard with an extraordinary subsoil of feldspar-rich reddish-brown sandstones, conglomerates, volcanic quartz porphyry and loess. This ancient stone lends the wine its unmistakable mineral signature.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Selective hand harvest in two passes in October 2022. Following skin contact and whole bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation took place over six weeks in stainless steel. Maturation for ten months on full lees in 600-litre wooden barrels, followed by a further eight months on fine lees in large wooden cask – a patient, respectful approach to great harvest material.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Pan-fried turbot with lemon butter, calf’s sweetbread with morels, scallops with saffron foam, wild salmon with fennel vegetables or mature Comté.
- Special Features
- A wine from the First Vineyard Site (1.ÖTW) – the highest quality level of Austrian vineyard classification. Fred Loimer is counted among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in the Kamptal.
