Wine description for Volnay „Les Famines“ AOC 2022 from Clos du Moulin aux Moines

Colour & Appearance
Deep ruby red with delicate violet reflections – a visual promise of depth and concentration.
Nose
Powerful and multi-layered, this Volnay unfolds with increasing aeration. Dark fruits meld with crisp red berry fruit and bergamot, underpinned by damp forest floor, light tobacco and subtle spices. A slightly smoky character lends the wine additional complexity – refined Burgundy pleasure announces itself.
Palate
The 2022 vintage proves remarkably accessible already. The dark fruit with blackcurrant undertones presents itself fleshy and bite-worthy, carried by fluffy, tightly woven tannins with aromatic, herbaceous depth. Ripe acidity acts elegantly in the background, lending the refined, medium-bodied wine structure and length without pushing itself to the fore.
Finish
In the aftertaste, liquorice, dark tobacco and aniseed emerge – an aromatic summation that unites elegance and depth, demonstrating remarkable length.
Terroir & Origin
The tiny vineyard site „Les Famines“, just 0.18 hectares, lies at the foot of the Volnay hill at 230 metres elevation with easterly exposure. The deep, gravelly soils of red clay and limestone – once notorious for their barrenness – today produce concentrated wines with pronounced character. The vines, planted in 1996 and 2001, stand at high density of 10,000 stocks per hectare.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir, hand-harvested and selected at the sorting table. Slow fermentation and maceration over 15-20 days in large wooden vats with 30-70% destemmed grapes, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts. 12 months maturation in used oak barrels, bottled unfiltered and unfined – purist winemaking that gives terroir pride of place.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to refined cuisine: game dishes, braised beef, duck breast or aged Comté. The structure and aromatic depth harmonise perfectly with mushroom dishes and robust terrines.
Special Features
The 2022 vintage opens its drinking window early and wide – an accessible, yet by no means simple Volnay that impresses both young and with some bottle age. Moderate alcohol content of 12.5% underscores the elegance.
