Colour & Appearance

Luminous, deep ruby red with violet reflections at the rim. Impressive density in the glass, which already visually announces the concentration of this single vineyard site.

Nose

Precise and multi-layered: dark cherries and cassis meet graphite and damp earth. Subtle notes of lavender, thyme and black pepper testify to the freshness of the 2022 vintage. In the background cedarwood and tobacco, which stem from the elegant barrique ageing, yet never dominate.

Palate

Powerful and at the same time of remarkable finesse. The 14.5% alcohol is perfectly integrated into a structure of silky tannins and vibrant acidity. On the palate, ripe blackberries, plum compote and a mineral saltiness unfold, lending the wine tension. The texture is velvety, almost creamy, with a depth that reveals new facets layer upon layer.

Finish

Extraordinarily long and precise. The fruit fades slowly whilst mineral notes and spices linger. A hint of dark chocolate and iron ore in the finale underscores the provenance from this legendary parcel.

Terroir & Origin

El Pisón is one of the most famous single vineyard sites in Rioja – a mere 2.5 hectare south-facing vineyard with calcareous clay soils in Laguardia. The old Tempranillo vines, farmed biodynamically, produce grapes of extraordinary concentration and complexity.

Grape Variety & Vinification

100% Tempranillo from vines over 70 years old. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, ageing in French barriques. Artadi’s biodynamic approach and minimal intervention in the cellar allow the authenticity of the terroir to express itself unadulterated.

Food Pairing Recommendations

A wine for special occasions: lamb rack with herb crust, grilled beef steak, braised ox cheeks or aged Manchego. Also an excellent choice with game dishes such as venison loin.

Special Features

Artadi deliberately left the Rioja Denominación in 2015, which is why „Rioja“ does not appear on the label – a statement for independence and quality beyond association politics. El Pisón is regarded as one of Spain’s great terroir wines.
