Wine description for Abrí Las Alas – I Opened My Wings 2022 by Valdemonjas
- Colour & appearance
- Deep ruby red, dense and impenetrable right to the rim, with youthful violet reflections in the glass.
- Nose
- Subtle yet expressive: dark fruits – blackberry, black cherry – meet earthy-mineral undertones. The wood remains discreet in the background, contributing to complexity without overshadowing the fruit. A captivating, wonderfully balanced aromatic profile.
- Palate
- Here the artistry of the Moyanos reveals itself: the natural power of vines over 80 years old is translated into elegance and balance. Juicy fruit, a velvety texture, accompanied by fine-grained, elegant tannins. The wine vibrates on the palate whilst remaining precisely defined – never excessive, but rather linear, subtle and multi-layered.
- Finish
- Long and invigorating, with persistent freshness and mineral tension. A finale that leaves you eager for the next sip.
- Terroir & origin
- The premier vineyard site El Nogal de la Valera is located in La Horra, south of the estate, at an altitude of 800 metres. Here, Tempranillo vines over 80 years old are rooted in sand and clay. Extreme diurnal temperature shifts preserve acidity, whilst minimal yields ensure intense concentration. Master of Wine Pedro Ballesteros ranks this wine among the ten finest in Ribera del Duero.
- Grape variety & vinification
- Pure Tempranillo from organically certified vineyards. Fermentation takes place in small concrete tanks, followed by 19 months of ageing in French barriques. Since 2011, Italian oenologist Luca d’Attoma has been advising the estate – his influence is evident in the gentler extraction and precise use of oak.
- Food recommendations
- A wine for grilled lamb with rosemary, wild duck with dark jus or mature Manchego. Also an excellent choice with beef fillet with truffle or braised oxtail.
- Special features
- The name “Abrí Las Alas” – “I opened my wings” – reflects the Moyano family’s philosophy: wine as composition. Charo Agüera, a violinist with the Spanish National Orchestra for over three decades, assesses the balance of each barrel with her eyes closed. The result is a Ribera del Duero of unusual freshness and tension – far removed from the often opulent style typical of the region.
