Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Monvigliero 2020 3000ml Double Magnum by Vietti

Character
The Monvigliero by Vietti ranks among the great single-vineyard Barolos of Piedmont – a wine that rewards patience and promises depth. In the imposing double magnum (3.0 litre), it matures more slowly and evenly than in smaller bottle formats, which gives it extraordinary ageing potential. The vintage 2020 is considered warm and sun-blessed in Piedmont, yet it produced wines with clear structure, ripe tannins and aromatic precision.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Monvigliero in the municipality of Verduno is one of the historically most significant and equally distinctive of the Barolo region. The soil is characterised by pale, lime-rich Tortonian marine sediment, which imparts an unmistakable elegance and floral expression to the wine – less masculine and robust than some Serralunga Barolos, yet possessed of fascinating finesse and aromatic vibrancy. The hillside location with good exposure ensures controlled ripening that preserves Nebbiolo’s characteristic tension.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s most demanding and uncompromising grape varieties – thin-skinned, high in tannins, marked by acidity and of extraordinary complexity. Vietti, one of Piedmont’s most renowned estates, stands for a tradition-conscious, artisanal approach with extended skin contact and maturation in large oak casks (botti). This style respects the terroir without overworking it, and prioritises longevity over early accessibility.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands dishes with substance and depth. Ideal pairings include Brasato al Barolo (beef chuck braised in Barolo), Tajarin with white truffle, wild boar ragù or aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Those wishing to experience the wine in its full expression should decant it – or better still, wait a few years.
