Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Monvigliero 2020 3000ml Double Magnum by Vietti

Character
The Monvigliero by Vietti represents Barolo elegance in its purest form. This cru vineyard site in Castiglione Falletto is considered one of the most refined in the entire Barolo region. Vietti, renowned for generations for precise, terroir-driven wines, crafts here a Barolo of aristocratic restraint and impressive length. The double magnum format promises moreover exceptional ageing potential over decades.
Terroir & Origin
The Monvigliero vineyard site lies on the south-western slopes of Castiglione Falletto, one of the three classic Barolo villages. The calcareous marl soils with their high proportion of Tortonian sediments impart to the wines that characteristic combination of structure and elegance. The 2020 vintage is considered exceptional in Piedmont – a warm, dry summer with cool nights enabled perfect ripeness whilst retaining freshness. Vietti’s access to this terroir dates back to the 1960s.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo, the capricious queen of Piedmont, reveals its more accessible side in Monvigliero. Vietti practises traditional vinification with modern understanding: lengthy macerations, ageing in large wooden casks that give the wine time without dominating it. The grape variety brings its typical notes of tar rose, cherry, tobacco and truffle, whilst the vineyard site provides silky tannins and vibrant acidity. At 14% alcohol, the wine shows power, yet never heaviness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Barolo calls for Piedmontese cuisine: Brasato al Barolo, Tajarin with white truffle, Risotto al Barolo or aged Castelmagno cheese. Game dishes such as venison loin or braised rabbit also harmonise splendidly. The wine’s structure carries robust mushroom dishes with porcini or cepe mushrooms. For optimal enjoyment, the wine should be decanted several hours before serving.
