Wine Description for Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2021 3000ml Double Magnum by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous garnet red of medium transparency – classic for a young Nebbiolo from Cannubi, still carrying all the energy of the vintage.
- Nose
- The nose is of striking complexity and depth: blood and iron as the unmistakable Nebbiolo signature, underpinned by ripe plums, succulent cherries and a hint of cherry pit bitterness. These are joined by red berries, a touch of marzipan, fresh mint, a whisper of eucalyptus and the seductive perfume of candied lavender – sensual, precise, irresistible.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Cannubi unfolds with elegant sovereignty: warm, ripe fruit meets floral finesse, carried by impeccably silky tannins that reveal the signature of the sandy soil. The clear, fresh acidity holds everything in perfect balance. Notes of blue fruit, iron and subtle earth lend the wine depth and gravitas. A quietly flowing stream – powerful yet possessed of great inner calm.
- Finish
- Long, mineral and marked by fine spice. The tannins caress the palate long after the final sip – a promise of an extraordinary ageing curve.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Cannubi is regarded as one of Barolo’s mythical vineyard sites – perfect south-facing exposure, a unique soil composition with a remarkably high sand content, which gives the wine its characteristic elegance and harmony. No other soil in Piedmont shapes Nebbiolo with such suppleness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Nebbiolo (clones Michet and Lampia), harvested in early October 2021. Fermentation in rotating tanks with twice-daily pump-overs, 14 days of skin contact, malolactic fermentation in steel. Ageing over two years in barrels and barriques of French oak – an approach that respects both fruit and structure equally.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine of this calibre demands worthy companions: Brasato al Barolo, Tajarin with white truffle, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or a classic Risotto with porcini mushrooms. The double magnum is ideal for grand tables and special occasions – or for eternity in the cellar.
- Special Features
- The 3000ml double magnum is the ideal format for long-term cellaring: larger bottles age more slowly and develop incomparable complexity. Chiara Boschis ranks among the defining personalities of modern Barolo – her Cannubi is a reference wine of Piedmont. The 2021 vintage is considered outstanding: cool, structured, long-lived.
