Wine Description for Barbera d’Alba DOC Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 2021 by Vietti

Colour & Appearance
Muted violet-red, colour-dense to the rim – a visual statement that already hints at the concentration of this extraordinary Barbera.
Nose
Pure freshness and youthful exuberance: red and blue fruits unite with wild herbs, cedarwood, marzipan and nougat. These are joined by pronounced floral notes of violet and rose – an aromatic profile that carries fire, finesse and intensity.
Palate
Fascinatingly juicy with fruit sweetness and invigorating acidity, which transitions into a mineral-saline character. The tannins feel ripe, yet still flirt charmingly with their youthfulness. Remarkable: the 15.5% alcohol feels noticeably more moderate than the label might suggest – a sign of this wine’s exceptional balance. An Italian classic that demands a second glass immediately.
Finish
Long-lasting with mineral precision and lingering fruitiness.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the steep, terraced vineyard site Scarrone in Castiglione Falletto – an outstanding Barolo Cru location. The east-northeast-facing parcel with its vines planted in 1918 sits on calcareous marl. The low yield of these century-old vines naturally produces the extraordinary concentration.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-picked Barbera grapes, two-day cold maceration, two-week fermentation in open stainless steel vessels. Maturation for 18 months predominantly in barriques (25% new) and to a lesser extent in large wooden casks. Neither fined nor filtered.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Definitely decant and serve lightly chilled. Ideal with braised dishes, Osso Bucco with roasted vegetables, Pappardelle with sausage red wine ragù or risotto with chanterelles and blackberries. Generally perfect with dishes featuring intense sauces.
Special Features
A youthful, still exuberant wine that would benefit wonderfully from some bottle age. The vines over 100 years old lend this Barbera a depth and complexity that far exceeds the ordinary.
