Wine description for Uvaggio Bianco “Areore” DOC 2023 by Scarbolo
- Colour & appearance
- Rich golden yellow shifting towards lemon yellow, with a fine greenish glint – a glass that promises depth even visually.
- Nose
- An aromatic interplay rarely found at this price point: turnip, swede and parsnip meet ripe mirabelle plum, khaki and green mango. Added to this are herbs such as lemon balm, aniseed and coriander. This is no simple white wine – it is an intellectual exercise in the glass, where vegetal depth and ripe fruit fuel one another.
- Palate
- Powerful and compact, with perfectly integrated acidity that never intrudes yet provides clear direction. A fine bitter structure of tannin and phenolics lends grip and energy, whilst the wine remains slender despite its substance. Root vegetables and yellow fruit continue on the palate, always maintaining that tension between earthiness and freshness.
- Finish
- Long and composed, with spicy notes of pimento, fennel and coriander combining with yellow, almost earthy nuances to create an exciting finale. A wine that lingers without ever feeling heavy – and one that proves white wines from Friuli can also age with complexity.
- Terroir & origin
- From the Friuli Grave, not far from the River Torre, where clay- and gravel-rich soils and a unique microclimate between the Adriatic and the Alps create ideal conditions. The Scarbolo family has been farming organically with biodynamic influences since 2020 – here in Lauzacco, they produce wines of genuine character.
- Grape varieties & vinification
- An unusual cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Friulano that sees patience in the cellar: four to five years of maturation before the wine is released. The result is a depth and complexity one would scarcely expect at this price level.
- Food recommendations
- With grilled vegetables with herb butter, ravioli with sage butter or poultry with lemon and olives. Fish with fennel or Asian dishes featuring aniseed and coriander also pair superbly with this structured wine.
- Special characteristics
- What sets this wine apart: the combination of intense vegetal aromatics – turnip, sweetcorn, herbs – with ripe fruit and a mouthfeel that balances power and elegance. No standard white wine, but a deliberately distinctive style from a house that dares to work at a slower pace.
