According to the new STK regulations, a vintner may only release one grape variety in a single site as a Große STK site. Therefore, Armin Tement has restructured the Zieregg vineyard. The Morillon from the Große STK site Ried Zieregg Steilriegel is located in the south-western part of Ried Zieregg. A good 90% of the Steilriegel is planted with Morillon, the few vines of Sauvignon will probably go into the Vinothek Reserve. The average 40-year-old vines are planted on loose brown soil on a 16-million-year-old coral limestone saddle with a good 50% slope and a southwestern exposure at 400-480 metres above sea level.
Spontaneously fermented and then matured for 24 months on the fine lees in small oak barrels, the Morillon was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Color
Light straw yellow with green reflections.
Nose
The extract-rich fruit of the 2020 Morillon from the "Steilriegel" vineyard of Weingut Tement is crowned by distinctive herbaceous aromas, reminiscent of both fresh and dried kitchen herbs. Borage and oregano mingle with goutweed and are underpinned by joyful yellow-fruited aromas of apple peel and small plump pears. Wet table chalk and salt lemons complement the nose of this currently silent wine, which will only reach its full potential with a few years of bottle maturity.
Mouth
So off into the decanter, preferably upside down! Incredibly straightforward and disciplined on the palate with not a gram of fat on the hip. With a transparent crystalline structure and elegantly woven acidity, rich yet sinewy extract and finely contoured phenolics on the tongue, it whistles so unbelievably that one is tempted to forget the wine's format. Even though it can be drunk first-class as a youngster, one loses sight of the greatness and power it contains. Clearly Bruce Lee instead of Schwarzenegger.
