Wine Description for Steiner Hund Riesling Reserve 2008 from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Luminous straw yellow with golden reflections that dignify the advanced age of this Riesling.
Nose
This 2008 displays a fascinating evolution with characterful edges and corners that make it all the more intriguing. Dark rose petals and bee’s honey merge with Galia melons, whilst exotic spice notes of curry powder, clove and turmeric open an unexpected oriental dimension. An aromatic profile that demonstrates courage in maturity.
Palate
Surprisingly youthful and vital, the wine presents itself on the palate. The fine-grained structure feels creamy and soft, without becoming heavy-handed. The moderate acidity contributes to a juicy, invigorating drinking flow that positively invites further sips. Remarkable how fresh this Riesling tastes after 16 years – a testament to the quality of the vintage and the biodynamic work at Nikolaihof.
Terroir & Origin
The Ried Steiner Hund extends above Stein an der Donau into the Reisperbachtal. The terraced vineyards of Nikolaihof lie at 230 to 290 metres elevation with impressive 36° slope gradient. The subsoil of crystalline gneiss and mica schist with amphibolite characterises a dry rigosol soil with low water retention capacity – ideal conditions for mineral, age-worthy Rieslings.
Food Pairing Recommendations
As an Archive Release 2024, this Riesling proves itself a versatile food companion. Perfect with roasted char, zander fillet with saffron sauce, veal schnitzel with mushroom cream or aged mountain cheese. The oriental notes also harmonise beautifully with mildly spiced Asian dishes.
Special Characteristics
An archive wine from the legendary biodynamic pioneer Nikolaihof, which impressively demonstrates how well Wachau Riesling Reserve can age. The characterful edges make it authentic and intriguing – not a polished wine, but an honest snapshot with personality.
