Wine Description for Spätburgunder Sekt Brut Nature 2018 by Clemens Busch
- Colour & Appearance
- Delicate salmon rosé with reddish shimmer, carried by a remarkably fine, energetic perlage that signals precision and artisanal maturity.
- Nose
- Initially stony and austere, then a precise red fruit aromatics unfolds: raspberry, sour cherry, rosehip. Alongside sourdough bread crust, freshly chopped almonds, hazelnuts and green walnuts. A dominant interplay of dried herbs – marjoram, oregano – structures the overall picture. The yeasty character remains discreet, yet provides backbone and depth. A fine green shimmer, a herbal freshness, runs subtly throughout.
- Palate
- The fruit recedes in favour of a striking, almost masculine structure. The acidity is excellently integrated, carries the texture without dominating. The mousse builds briefly creamy, then is immediately captured by the overall structure. Despite Brut Nature, the wine remains balanced, with a compact, forceful mid-palate – energetic, present, focused. Recurring contrasts provide dynamism: fine acidity, striking herbal spice, nutty elements of hazelnut and almond.
- Finish
- The red fruit returns – barberry, rosehip, sour cherry, some wild cherry and forest raspberry – lending length, aromatic depth and tension. The wine remains racy and slender, in the Mosel context remarkably precisely pitched, clean on the back palate, cleansing, brightening and invigorating.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Spätburgunder grapes come from the Pündericher Dorfseite, not from the famous Marienburg. The gentle slope faces south-west – typically the first grapes harvested at Weingut Clemens Busch.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). Over 60 months ageing on the lees – a statement of patience and precision. The first release of this 2018 was disgorged in February 2025. Brut Nature with only 1.3 g/l residual sugar at 5.1 g/l acidity. A sparkling wine that carries, demands and brings lasting pleasure.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Raw beef fillet tartare, oysters, scallop carpaccio, cured salmon, calf sweetbreads with morels, sautéed mushrooms with herbs, aged Comté or Gruyère.
- Special Features
- A rare Pinot Noir sparkling wine from the Mosel – a wine that combines the mineral precision of the region with the structural power of the grape variety. The extreme ageing time on the lees and the courage to embrace zero dosage make this sparkling wine an extraordinary statement.
