Wine Description for Spätburgunder Sekt Brut Nature 2018 by Clemens Busch
- Colour & Appearance
- Delicate salmon rosé with reddish shimmer, threaded through with an exceptionally fine, energetic perlage that signals elegance and vibrancy.
- Nose
- Stony and austere at first – typical Mosel – the sparkling wine then opens to a precise, red fruit aromatics: raspberry, sour cherry, rosehip. These are joined by sourdough bread crust, freshly chopped almonds, hazelnuts and green walnuts. Particularly characteristic is the dominant play of dried herbs – marjoram, oregano – which lends the wine structure and depth. The yeasty character remains subtle, yet provides backbone. A fine green shimmer, a herbal freshness, runs through it subliminally.
- Palate
- Here the fruit steps back in favour of a marked, almost masculine structure. The acidity is beautifully integrated, carrying the texture without dominance. The mousse builds briefly with creaminess, then is immediately woven into the overall structure. Despite Brut Nature, the sparkling wine remains balanced, with a compact, forceful mid-palate – energetic, present, focused. The spice of dried herbs, the nutty element of hazelnut and almond provide contrasts. In the finish, red fruit returns: barberry, rosehip, wild cherry, forest raspberry.
- Finish
- Racy, slender, remarkably precise. The wine remains clear, cleansing, brightening and extraordinarily invigorating – with great length and aromatic depth.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Spätburgunder grapes come from the Pündericher Dorfseite on the Mosel, a gently sloping vineyard site facing south-west – not from the famous Marienburg. These grapes traditionally mark the beginning of the harvest at Clemens Busch winery.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Spätburgunder, aged on the lees for over 60 months. The first release of the 2018 vintage was disgorged in February 2025. With merely 1.3 g/l residual sugar and 5.1 g/l acidity, this sparkling wine embodies uncompromising dryness and precision.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Smoked trout, game terrine, mushroom risotto, goat’s cheese with herbs, scallops with hazelnut butter, calf’s sweetbreads or as a demanding aperitif.
- Special Characteristics
- A sparkling wine that demands and rewards. The exceptionally long lees ageing imparts complexity and depth, whilst the Mosel typicity – stony, clear, precise – remains entirely intact. A Spätburgunder sparkling wine of world-class calibre.
