Ornamental Fandler

Zierfandler, also known as Spätrot in its Lower Austrian homeland near Vienna, is one of the most fascinating white grape varieties in Central Europe. Its grapes turn reddish in the late autumn sun, which earned it this characteristic second name. In the glass, the variety unfolds a dense tension between ripe power and a vibrant, precise acid structure that gives the wines great longevity. Typical aromas include ripe quince, dried herbs and delicate almond notes, balanced by a salty piquancy. This structure also makes Zierfandler the ideal partner for characterful cuvées. How harmoniously the variety integrates is demonstrated by Loimer in the “Gluegglich Weiss”. Together with Chardonnay and Riesling, it brings spicy depth and freshness here into a wonderfully uncomplicated, naturally cloudy drinking pleasure.
