Ornamental Fandler
Also known as: Spätrot (Austria)
Zierfandler belongs to the Thermenregion south of Vienna, where the grape variety is usually blended with Rotgipfler – a regional classic that has no significance anywhere else. Those wishing to discover Zierfandler as a single varietal will find a rare opportunity with Loimer from Kamptal.
The wines often carry a slightly exotic fruit tone, yet remain taut and mineral – not an overloaded aroma bomb, but a wine that convinces through structure. The fact that Zierfandler receives scarcely any international attention is likely also due to it being rarely exported. The few bottles that exist are mostly drunk in Austria.
