Traminer
As one of Europe’s oldest cultivated grape varieties, Traminer brings a dense, almost baroque spiciness to the glass. Its thick-skinned, reddish berries lend the wine a golden-yellow to slightly copper hue, along with a distinctive phenolic character. Defined by notes reminiscent of rose petals, muscat and ripe fruit, the variety reveals itself as enormously structure-driven, particularly when aged on lees or fermented with skin contact.
Just how versatile this profile can be is demonstrated by Meinklang in Burgenland: in the single-varietal “Konkret Weiss”, Traminer unfolds a deep, earthy power, whilst in the “Weißer Mulatschak” it joins forces with Grüner Veltliner and Welschriesling to deliver floral freshness. In the Kamptal, Loimer masterfully showcases the fine tannin structure and multi-layered spice of this historic variety in the “Traminer Alte Rebe mit ACHTUNG” through careful skin fermentation.
