Frühburgunder

As a natural, early-ripening mutation of Pinot Noir, Frühburgunder – also known in France as Pinot Madeleine – possesses a completely unique, fascinating identity. On the warm, steep slate slopes of the Ahr, this demanding grape variety reaches its absolute peak. In the glass, it often presents a darker colour and more substance than its famous relative, characterised by dense berry fruit, fine spice, and velvety, ripe tannins with moderate acidity. How vibrantly and profoundly this historic variety can be interpreted is masterfully demonstrated by the Bertram Baltes estate with their Neuenahrer Sonnenberg. This wine combines the variety’s typical dark cherry fruit with a fine, artisanal structure that pairs excellently with wild game birds or braised wild mushrooms.
