Wine Description for Neuenahrer Sonnenberg 2022 by Bertram-Baltes

Colour & Appearance
Muted, dark cherry red with delicate lightening towards the rim – an Frühburgunder that doesn’t hide its origins from cooler vineyard sites. The colour promises substance alongside elegance.
Nose
Juicy cherry and plum dominate initially, accompanied by blackcurrant, damson and pomegranate. With air contact, a fascinating complexity unfolds: fresh herbs, a hint of vanilla and graphite join in. A wine that rests within itself, yet is far from closed, inviting contemplation.
Palate
Here the true character of this Frühburgunder reveals itself: juicy, fruit-driven and strikingly elegant. The refined structure and delicate fruit sweetness make it, at a moderate 11.5% ABV, a charming companion. The texture is silky, the balance between fruit and acidity perfectly calibrated – a wine that combines drinkability with substance.
Finish
Medium-length with persistent fruit and a fine mineral note reminiscent of the graphite on the nose. Clean, precise, without any heaviness.
Terroir & Origin
The Neuenahrer Sonnenberg on the Ahr is one of the classic vineyard sites for Frühburgunder. The slate soils and the sheltered microclimate of the Ahr Valley shape this wine with its mineral freshness and simultaneous fruit abundance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested Frühburgunder, spontaneously fermented in barrels of local oak. Bottled unfiltered and unfined – an honest, authentic approach that preserves the wine’s natural texture and vitality. The oak is perfectly integrated, never intrusive.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Grilled feta in barbecue marinade on rocket with pomegranate seeds, tortillas with monkfish, pointed cabbage and salsa or lamb fillet with yellow curry rice and coriander. The wine loves the counterpoint of spice and acidity. Serve lightly chilled (14-16°C), preferably decanted.
Special Features
A prime example of how elegant and approachable Frühburgunder can be. At 11.5% ABV, a perfect wine for extended meals – substantial enough for serious cuisine, yet never tiring.
