Freisa
Also known as: Monferrina, Freisa Piccolo
Freisa smells of strawberries – hence the name, from the Latin fresia. This Piedmontese grape variety has stood in the shadow of Nebbiolo for centuries, with which it is genetically related, but does precisely what Nebbiolo cannot: it is accessible, fruity, playful. Red berries, violets, a light spiciness – and yet enough acidity and tannin not to become banal.
At Valfaccenda in Piedmont, one can see how charming this underestimated variety can be when taken seriously.
