Wine description for Sauvignon Blanc Kalk und Löss 2024 by Weingut am Klotz
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale straw yellow, clear and youthful in the glass — visually already a promise of freshness.
- Nose
- A classic, unmistakable Sauvignon profile: mint, elderflower, lemon and lime, accompanied by a touch of nettle and whitecurrant with its leaves. Garden herbs, fine limestone and the warm note of ripe gooseberry complete the picture — cool and sunny at once.
- Palate
- Juicy and taut, threaded with lively acidity and a cool freshness. At the same time, the wine shows surprising structure and body — no light-footed terrace wine, but a serious drop with piquant herbal spice, citrus zest, ripe white berries and a squeeze of lime.
- Finish
- Intense and aromatic, with herbal spice and a chalky resonance — a finale that makes you want to take another sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines grow atop the Isteiner Klotz in the Markgräflerland, surrounding the estate. There, a deeper layer of loess covers the rock than on the slopes below — richer, more fertile soils over a bedrock of Jurassic limestone, a geological rarity in Germany otherwise found mainly in the Jura and Burgundy. It is precisely this combination of loess and limestone that defines the wine: body from above, minerality from below.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Sauvignon Blanc, dry, with a moderate 12.0% ABV. The grapes are harvested ripe but at the beginning of their ripening window — which explains the moderate alcohol level and the crisp acidity. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, only roughly filtered and sulphured at a very low dose just before bottling: a reductive, varietally pure style that places fruit and terroir centre stage.
- Food Pairings
- A versatile food wine: ideal with goat’s cheese (the classic pairing for this variety), asparagus with hollandaise sauce, pan-fried pike-perch, sushi or a fresh goat’s cheese salad with herbs. Also an enticing combination with Thai curry with lime and coriander.
- Special Features
- Weingut am Klotz is one of the most exciting new discoveries on the German wine scene: taken over in 2018/2019 by the families behind Sektweingut Reinecker and Weingut Franz Keller, it has been fully converted to organic viticulture. The fact that Sauvignon Blanc grows here on Burgundian Jurassic limestone makes this wine a rarity — French geology, a Baden touch, hand-harvesting and minimal intervention in the cellar all included.
