Wine Description for Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2023 1500ml Magnum by Col d’Orcia

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, semi-transparent ruby red with youthful brilliance – a visual promise of elegance and drinking pleasure.
Nose
This 2023 vintage captivates through aromatic complexity rather than sheer power. The nose unfolds a multi-layered bouquet of blackcurrants, wild strawberries and sour cherries, interwoven with floral notes such as violets and dried roses. Subtle accents of orange peel, cedarwood, bread spices and a hint of undergrowth lend the wine additional depth and finesse.
Palate
On the palate, the pure Sangiovese reveals its most elegant side: juicy, well-balanced and with accomplished tannin structure. The wine glides smoothly across the palate, carried by cherries, red berries and plums. The characteristic Sangiovese acidity provides freshness and tension, whilst a fine resistance in the texture gives the wine structure without ever becoming dominant.
Finish
Intense and lingering – the aftertaste unites fruit, floral notes and subtle spice into a harmonious finale that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the south-facing vineyard sites of Col d’Orcia at 250 metres altitude with views over the Orcia river. The cool spring of 2023 with low temperatures and frequent rainy days demanded precise vineyard management. The moderate summer without extreme heat enabled perfect physiological ripeness without stress.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Sangiovese, fermented for 10–12 days at controlled temperature below 26°C in specially crafted, shallow steel tanks for gentle extraction. Maturation took place for 10–12 months in Slavonian oak barrels (75 and 150 hl) as well as partly in concrete tanks, followed by bottle ageing.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to Pasta al Ragù, Saltimbocca alla Romana, Ossobuco, grilled beef, lamb cutlets with rosemary or semi-aged Pecorino cheese.
Special Features
The magnum bottle (1500ml) promises optimal ageing conditions and is ideal for social gatherings. A Rosso di Montalcino that brings pleasure from the very first moment – accessible, yet by no means simple.
