Wine details
Olivier Humbrecht
This unique drop has its roots in a kaleidoscope of small vineyards around the picturesque village of Gueberschwihr with additional influence from two fresh Grand Cru Hengst vineyards. Wines that thrive on limestone soils, regardless of location and topography, often have one thing in common - they hold their cards close to their chest at first, often only revealing their full aromatic potential after a few years. A distinctive characteristic is a certain austerity that is often noticeable on the palate and gives way to a lively acidity. Limestone soils are late bloomers as they need time to warm up, especially in Gueberschwihr where the clay content is more pronounced. Nevertheless, they are hardy and make for robust vines.
Expansion information
The 2018 Roche Calcaire played a long fermentation reel and successfully managed to end up dry. Often, this wine is characterised by high acidity, which influences the fermentation kinetics. The ideal balance achieved in 2019 is a masterpiece.
Colour scheme
A strong golden yellow.
Scent
The scent of limestone is unmistakable, and with a lively aeration, other nuances such as apple, lemon peel, young mango, angelica and coriander unfold, rounded off by a subtle meat stock and oyster shell note. An irresistible bouquet of fragrances that invites you to dive in.
Taste experience
On the palate, the 2019 Riesling Roche Calcaire dances with a filigree elegance. The acidity is clearly noticeable, the coolness shines through and leaves an aristocratic impression. A certain austerity in wine is always welcome for me, and here it is underlined by a breathtaking clarity and precision. These are wines that not only age wonderfully, but are also the ideal accompaniment to meals thanks to their distinctive character.
A decanter and large glasses are recommended for the ideal enjoyment experience.
