Wine Description for Riesling Karthäuserhof Grosses Gewächs 2022 from Karthäuserhof

Colour & Appearance
Light to medium straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a classic appearance for precise Mosel Riesling.
Nose
Restrained and complex in equal measure: lemon and greengage form the foundation, accompanied by mint and fresh garden herbs. Above this hovers a fascinating layer of stone smoke, a hint of reduction and a touch of liquorice – signs of a Grosses Gewächs with ageing potential.
Palate
Here the true nature of this GG reveals itself: pleasantly lean, yet by no means lightweight. A forceful apple acidity drives the wine forward, paired with pronounced bitter notes that create tension and precision. The moderate alcohol content of 12% vol. underscores the elegance.
Finish
The finale is remarkable: bone dry and mineral-driven. Lemon, bergamot, again mint and the texture of wet pebbles – a finish that lets you taste the Devonian slate of the Karthäuserhofberg virtually. Long, precise, uncompromising.
Terroir & Origin
The legendary Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg on the Ruwer, a tributary of the Mosel, is one of Germany’s historic vineyard sites. The Devonian slate imparts the wines with their characteristic minerality and tension – a vineyard that has been cultivated since the Middle Ages by Carthusian monks.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Riesling from the highest quality tier of the Mosel. The cool Ruwer location allows for extended ripening periods at moderate alcohol levels. The winemaking emphasises precision and terroir expression rather than opulent fruit.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The taut acidity and minerality call for appropriate partners: pan-fried char, scallops with lemon butter, asparagus risotto or medium-aged goat’s cheese. Also an exciting combination with Asian cuisine featuring ginger and coriander.
Special Features
A GG that will reward patience. The structure, acidity and minerality promise development over at least a decade. Already impressive now, yet still reserved – a wine for connoisseurs who value precision over approachability.
