Wine description for Riesling Berg Roseneck Grosses Gewächs 2023 1500ml Magnum by Peter Jakob Kühn

Character
Peter Jakob Kühn is counted amongst the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in the Rheingau. His Berg Roseneck Grosses Gewächs embodies the essence of this steep, south-facing vineyard site above Oestrich. The magnum bottle promises a slower, more harmonious development – a format that does justice to the complexity of this vineyard wine. The 2023 vintage brings the crystalline precision for which Kühn’s dry Rieslings are renowned, at a moderate 12.5% alcohol an elegant restraint rather than opulent fullness.
Terroir & Origin
The Berg Roseneck ranks amongst the Rheingau’s historic top vineyard sites, characterised by deep phyllite soils with a high slate content. This soil structure imparts the wines their characteristic minerality and tension. The steep hillside slope ensures optimal sun exposure and natural drainage. For decades, Kühn has farmed his parcels biodynamically according to Demeter standards, resulting in living soil and grapes with a pronounced vineyard character. The Rheingau, traditionally the home of great dry Rieslings, finds here in Kühn’s hands a particularly authentic interpretation.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling in its purest form: Kühn eschews oenological tricks and relies on spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in traditional wooden casks. The wines mature on fine lees, lending them texture and depth without obscuring clarity. The dry vinification (evident in minimal residual sugar) emphasises the saline minerality and the taut acidity structure that characterises Rheingau Riesling from phyllite soils. Kühn’s philosophy: let the wine make itself, don’t make the wine.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of such precision demands equally considered cuisine: pan-fried turbot with herb butter, calf’s sweetbreads with morels, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or a mature Comté. The mineral structure harmonises beautifully with raw fish – sashimi or oysters. The wine also demonstrates its versatility with poultry in cream sauces. The magnum is perfect for festive occasions with multiple courses.
