Wine Description for Riesling Alte Reben „Hemsberg“ 2024 by Barnert & Drewitz

Colour & Appearance
Intense straw yellow, luminous and clear in the glass – a visual promise of substance and maturity.
Nose
This Hemsberg displays the full spectrum of a characterful granite Riesling: ripe apples and crisp apple skins meet greengage plums, peaches and mirabelle plums. These are joined by grapefruit zest, a subtle nutty note and the mineral presence of stone. A slightly lactic-sweet yeast note lends complexity, whilst herbs provide additional spice. Piquant and inviting in equal measure.
Palate
On the palate, the 2024 presents itself with pleasant presence and tart-juicy character. The light body and perceptible extract give the wine substance without heaviness. The stone fruit aromatics continue, accompanied by soft apples and fine zests. The balance between spice and fruit is remarkably well-achieved, the acidity agile and invigorating, the minerality pronounced and typical of the granite scree terroir.
Finish
Medium to long, with lingering stone fruit and a saline minerality that invites the next sip. The acidity remains present and lends the finish freshness and tension.
Terroir & Origin
From the historic steep vineyard site Bensheimer Wolfsmagen on the Hessische Bergstraße, first mentioned in 1582. The Hemsberg parcel is characterised by granite scree in the subsoil – a terroir that gives Riesling its characteristic minerality and spice. The vines planted in 1990 have now reached the ideal age for complexity and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling from old vines, aged in stainless steel with extended yeast contact, which lends the wine additional texture and complexity. At 12% alcohol, the wine displays elegance and drinkability.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with pan-fried char, trout meunière, pike-perch with herb butter or asparagus with hollandaise sauce. Also an excellent choice with goat’s cheese, flammekuchen or Asian dishes with ginger and lemongrass.
Special Features
An authentic vineyard wine from an almost forgotten wine region, proving that the Hessische Bergstraße with its granite soils can produce first-class, terroir-driven Rieslings. Barnert & Drewitz are committed to tradition and artisanal precision.
