Terroir & Origin

The Douro, Portugal’s legendary wine region, is primarily known for powerful Port wines and increasingly for concentrated red wines. Niepoort, however, utilises the higher-altitude, cooler vineyard sites of the region, where the grapes retain their natural acidity. The schist soils of the Douro lend the wine its characteristic minerality, whilst the continental climate with its extreme temperature fluctuations provides aromatic complexity. The biodynamic approach (Bioma) underscores the connection to terroir.

Grape Variety & Vinification

The cuvée from Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca and Tempranillo (here called Tinta Roriz) combines the finest qualities of the Douro: Tinta Amarela brings floral notes and structure, Touriga Franca delivers elegance and finesse, whilst Tempranillo provides fruit and balance. The low alcohol content points to earlier harvesting and gentle extraction – Niepoort’s hallmark is restraint in the cellar, which preserves the wine’s authenticity. The focus lies on drinking pleasure rather than ageing potential, on authenticity rather than perfection.

This light-footed Douro is an ideal companion to grilled vegetables, mushroom dishes or traditional Bacalhau.
