In the glass
Colour
Delicate golden yellow with silvery reflections.
Nose
Intensely fragrant with apricot, passion fruit, cassis and elderflower, framed by piquant spice; with air, wild herbs and fresh grass join in.
Palate
Juicy and feather-light, it practically dances across the palate and lingers with refreshing coolness and fine minerality on the finish.
Character
Expressive, playful yet profound – a dry Muskateller with tension between opulent fragrance and cool precision.
Pairing
Ideal as an apéritif, with asparagus and herb vinaigrette, Asian summer rolls or a fresh goat’s cheese salad.
Notes
The spectacularly low 10.5% ABV makes it the perfect wine for spring and summer cuisine; the red sandstone terroir of the Mittelhaardt and biodynamic farming since 2006 shape its mineral coolness and spicy depth.
Tasting note
Colour & appearance
Delicate golden yellow with silvery reflections — bright, clear, almost shy in the glass.
Nose
A fireworks display of aromas such as only Muskateller can deliver: apricot, passion fruit, cassis and elderflower, accompanied by a fine streak of citrus zest. With air, wild herbs and freshly cut grass join in — piquant, profound, never perfumed.
Palate
Juicy yet astonishingly light on its feet: the fruit dances, the minerality of the Buntsandstein provides support, and a delicate spiciness creates tension. At just 10.5% vol., the wine feels almost weightless — dry, precise, cool.
Finish
Refreshing and long enough to let the herbal and citrus notes pass by once more. A cool, impeccably clean conclusion.
Terroir & origin
From Buntsandstein vineyard sites in the Mittelhaardt, the geological backbone around Ruppertsberg and Deidesheim. Michael Andres has been cultivating seven hectares across five individual sites there since 1993 — including steep terraces such as Mäushöhle, which others abandoned long ago. The sandy, heat-retaining rock lends his wines that slender, stony precision which also carries this Muskateller.
Grape variety & vinification
Muskateller is considered a diva among grape varieties — demanding in the vineyard and often sweetly banal in the glass. Not so here: Andres, who has run his estate biodynamically since 2006, relying on wild yeasts and dispensing with everything superfluous, vinifies it consistently dry. The result reveals the rare, serious side of the variety.
Food recommendations
The ideal start to spring and summer cuisine: asparagus with vinaigrette, Thai curry with lemongrass, ceviche or a fresh goat’s cheese tart with herbs. Also a small revelation enjoyed on its own on the terrace.
Special features
A dry Muskateller with 10.5 per cent alcohol remains the exception rather than the rule in Germany. Here, Andres proves that the variety is capable of genuine minerality and spice beyond sweetness — a wine that replaces perfume with precision.
