In the glass
Colour
Pale straw yellow with a light golden shimmer and a fine, persistent mousse.
Nose
Red forest berries, red apple and mirabelle plum, accompanied by subtle yeast notes and a hint of brioche from the long ageing on the lees.
Palate
Dry and taut on the palate, with lively acidity, fine fruit and a chalky, mineral coolness on the finish – entirely unobscured by any dosage.
Character
A purist, characterful Sekt with the fruit clarity of the Palatinate and honest Pinot nature – clear, lively and without heaviness.
Pairing
Oysters and other seafood, sushi, crisp veal carpaccio variations or as an apéritif with mild goat’s cheese.
Notes
Sekt made from 100% Pinot Meunier is rare in the Palatinate; organically certified, biodynamic cultivation on calcareous marl and coloured sandstone, spontaneous fermentation, long ageing on the lees and minimal sulphur use define Steffen Mugler’s signature style.
Tasting note
Character
A sparkling wine of a slender, linear style — bottled as a Brut Nature entirely without dosage, thus unveiled and dry to the core. Pinot Meunier, traditionally known in Germany as Müllerrebe, naturally brings bright fruit, soft accessibility and a fine, slightly earthy undertone. Without the buffer of sweetness, taut acidity and a finely beaded mousse come to the fore: a Sekt for the aperitif moment, unpretentious yet full of character.
Terroir & Origin
The vines grow around Maikammer in the Palatinate, on soils of calcareous marl and coloured sandstone (Buntsandstein) — a subsoil that lends the Mugler family’s wines their mineral clarity and light-footed style. Daniela and Steffen Mugler have run the family estate since 2002 and farm their vineyards biodynamically, certified organic, with their own composting and cover crops, entirely without chemical-synthetic treatments.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Meunier (Müllerrebe) is the third great Champagne variety, and here it takes the stage as a soloist rather than an extra: it yields early-ripening, fruit-driven base wines with a soft acid structure — a rewarding foundation for sparkling wine. Steffen Mugler, who oversees both vineyard and cellar, works according to the principle of the quiet cellar: minimal intervention, sparing use of sulphur, long ageing on the lees. For this Sekt, he founded the Andres & Mugler sparkling wine cellar together with Michael Andres — an artisanal project far removed from large tank farms.
Food Pairings
As a Brut Nature, it makes a brilliant start to a meal: with oysters, smoked salmon or sushi. Its vibrant acidity also cuts effortlessly through fat — for instance with fish and chips, goat’s cheese or a Palatinate-style potato soup with sausage. It equally shows its strengths alongside tempura vegetables or simply with salted almonds.
