Wine Description for Mäushöhle am Kirchenberg 2022 by Michael Andres

Colour & Appearance
Luminous pale straw yellow with lively green reflections – a youthful, vital Palatinate Riesling that promises freshness at first glance.
Nose
A textbook Riesling from the Palatinate: yellow and green apple dominate, accompanied by an impressive palette of green, herbal notes. Lemon balm, lemon thyme and lemongrass unfold intensely, joined by mint and coriander. The zest of lime and exotic kaffir lime leaves lend complexity, whilst nashi pear contributes a juicy component. Pea shoots and fennel seed round off the aromatic profile with an ethereal, vegetative character – intoxicating and refreshing in equal measure.
Palate
Precise and crystal-clear, this Riesling flows coolly across the palate – pure as a mountain stream. A wonderfully austere touch defines the character and deliberately pushes the fruit into the background. Instead, robust, crisp elements shine through, making this wine unmistakably Palatinate. Dry and assertive, with moderate yet defining acidity. Here the Riesling reveals its stony, hard side – demanding and invigorating in equal measure. Bitter compounds provide balance and drinkability.
Finish
Clear, austere and marked by mineral precision. The acidity carries long, the bitter notes linger – a wine that invites the next sip.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This characterful Riesling demands equally robust partners: Saumagen, roast pork with crackling, pan-fried char or pike-perch with herb butter. Also an excellent choice with goat’s cheese, roasted asparagus or Thai curry with coriander and lime.
Special Characteristics
An authentic Palatinate Riesling without frills – honest, direct and with pronounced vineyard site character. At 12% alcohol and at comparatively moderate prices, Michael Andres offers here a true character wine that makes terroir and winemaker’s hand equally palpable. A Riesling for purists who appreciate substance and individuality.
