Wine Description for Matassa Rouge VdF 2023 from Matassa
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous ruby red with bright reflections and characteristic slight cloudiness – a sign of unfined, natural wine.
- Nose
- This Carignan requires patience and plenty of air. Initially it presents itself cool and strongly reductive, with a fascinating forest floor aesthetic: damp earth, moss, undergrowth and the resinous notes of pine and spruce needles. Cold smoke and ethereal aromas dominate the bouquet. The fruit holds back – redcurrants shimmer through, accompanied by fresh mushrooms and ground pepper.
- Palate
- On the palate the fruit shows much more presence: lingonberries, redcurrants and rosehips provide mouth-filling freshness. The slender body doesn’t deceive about the enormous drinkability – this wine makes your mouth water. The precise acid structure is linear and vibrant, everything clings together elegantly.
- Finish
- The aftertaste shows a light, pleasant bitter note. Fine tannin coats the teeth subtly, whilst sage and juniper shape the aromatic conclusion – cool, herbal, refreshing.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Carignan from Roussillon, naturally vinified with moderate 11.5% alcohol. The slight cloudiness and reductive style bear witness to minimalist intervention – an honest, unadorned wine that places terroir above technique.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with grilled vegetables with herbs, mushroom risotto, lamb ragout with rosemary or ratatouille. The herbal freshness harmonises beautifully with Mediterranean stews and rustic terrines.
- Special Features
- A prime example of Tom Lubbe’s radical naturality at Matassa. The 2023 embodies a cool, Nordic character despite its southern origins – a wine that rewards patience and polarises with its unconventional aromatics. A must for lovers of authentic, unfined wines.
