Wine Description for Matassa Rouge VdF 2024 by Matassa

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, transparent ruby red with youthful freshness. The pale, almost Burgundian colour intensity reveals the deliberately moderate extraction and low alcohol content – a wine that prioritises elegance over power.
Nose
Bewitchingly lively and untamed. Wild strawberries and raspberries meet pomegranate and cranberries. Beneath them garrigue herbs, thyme, a hint of vervain and fine pepper notes. The aromatics feel vibrant, almost electrifying – pure liveliness in the glass.
Palate
Surprisingly crisp and quaffable at just 11% alcohol. The acidity dances across the tongue, carrying red fruit and cherry notes with playful lightness. Nothing feels heavy or extracted – instead, an almost playful texture with fine, sandy tannins. The wine feels unpolished, in the best sense: authentic, direct, unfiltered.
Finish
Medium length, juicy and refreshing. The fruit fades with mineral notes and a hint of Mediterranean herbs. You want to pour another glass immediately – that’s precisely what defines great everyday wines.
Terroir & Origin
From old Carignan vines in the hinterland of Roussillon, where altitude and cool nights provide natural freshness. The sparse soils of Calce and Fénouillèdes force the vines to develop deep roots and concentrated expression.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Carignan, vinified uncrushed, without added sulphites. Tom Lubbe relies on permanent ground cover and green manuring in the vineyard to naturally lower pH values and alcohol potential. Fermentation is spontaneous, maturation minimally interventionist – the wine essentially creates itself.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with grilled vegetables, ratatouille, charcuterie or tuna tataki. Also a revelation with Moroccan tagines or Provençal herb-based dishes. Served lightly chilled, an ideal summer wine.
Special Features
A wine that showcases the natural wine movement at its finest: lively, quaffable, authentic. Tom Lubbe’s uncompromising philosophy makes Matassa one of southern France’s most exciting wine estates.
