Wine Description for Marsannay „La Combe du Pré“ AOP 2020 by Jérôme Galeyrand

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, deep ruby red with youthful brilliance – a visual promise of Burgundian elegance.
Nose
Intense aromas of juicy young cherries dominate the bouquet, accompanied by subtle notes of caramel and fine oak. The slightly warm sweetness creates an appealing counterpoint to the hearty, fresh structure – a typical characteristic of the cooler north-facing site.
Palate
Here the true character of this vineyard site reveals itself: juicy, powerful and cool. An almost explosive, perfectly proportioned acidity carries the dark fruit and lends the generous 2020 vintage tension and freshness. The tannins present themselves as fine and silky, whilst an agreeable earthiness alongside elegant notes provides complexity. Plenty of energy in the glass.
Terroir & Origin
The 4.3-hectare vineyard site La Combe du Pré sits at 300 metres elevation beneath the forest of the same name. Its north-facing aspect makes it one of Marsannay’s coolest sites – the grapes ripen a week later than in Gevrey-Chambertin. Galeyrand manages 0.5 hectares here organically to biodynamically.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir, largely destemmed and fermented in tanks. Twelve months ageing in used 228-litre oak barrels with moderate new oak content (15-20%). Works exclusively with indigenous yeasts, eschews fining and enzymes, minimal or no SO₂ addition – a natural, terroir-oriented approach.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The earthy elegance harmonises beautifully with beef ribs with Roquefort sauce, saithe with mustard sauce and home fries or eggs Benedict with braised mushrooms. The vibrant acidity makes it an ideal companion for rich, spiced dishes.
Special Characteristics
A Marsannay that combines the cool precision of its north-facing site with the generosity of the 2020 vintage. Jérôme’s minimalist intervention approach lets the terroir speak clearly – an authentic, energetic Burgundy with soul.
