Tasting note
Character
A Pinot Noir that gives pleasure from the first sip: raspberry and sour cherry, a silken veil of tannin and a moderate 12.5% vol. The 2023 vintage gave it juice, the old vines give it depth. It is the open-hearted wine in Pierre-Henri Rougeot’s range, one you like to drink slightly cool and finish faster than planned.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes for “La Plante du Bois” come from Antoine Lienhardt, a friendly grower in Comblanchien on the Côte de Nuits who works biodynamically. Rougeot trades with him: Meursault from the family estate goes to Comblanchien, and in return these Pinot Noir grapes come to Beaune. The vines are over 60 years old.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, fermented with a high proportion of whole bunches, which gives the wine perfume and freshness. After about ten days on the skins it matures for around 18 months in used barriques. Fermentation starts spontaneously, and no sulphur is added during fermentation or ageing; only at bottling does Rougeot decide, barrel by barrel, whether a minimal dose is needed. Unfined and unfiltered, like all his wines.
Food Pairings
Its silky nature suits pink-roasted saddle of venison, pheasant or a hearty mushroom ragout. Coq au vin or a creamy Brie de Meaux are good ideas too, and lightly chilled it will even accompany a simple barbecue evening.
