Wine Description for Marsannay „Est-Ouest“ AOP 2023 by Jérôme Galeyrand

Character
The Marsannay „Est-Ouest“ by Jérôme Galeyrand is a wine that takes its name as a programme: East and West – an allusion to the different expositions of the vineyard parcels from which it is composed. Galeyrand, one of the quiet masters of the Côte de Nuits, works with deep conviction for terroir and against any form of over-manipulation. The result is a Burgundy that places elegance above weight – precise, clear and of honest provenance.
Terroir & Origin
Marsannay is the northernmost appellation of the Côte de Nuits and has long been underestimated – unjustly so. The soils here alternate between limestone, clay and marl, and the different slope exposures lend the wines a remarkable complexity. The vintage 2023 brought warm, dry conditions to Burgundy that produced ripe, structured wines – particularly with winemakers like Galeyrand, who rely on low yields and careful hand-harvesting, yielding wines of special depth and freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in Burgundy is not merely a wine, it is a philosophy. Galeyrand vinifies in the spirit of artisanal minimalism: minimal intervention, natural yeasts, judicious use of oak – if at all. The focus lies on the transparency of place, not on the expression of the cellar. The „Est-Ouest“ exemplifies this approach: an assemblage concept that gains complexity through terroir, not through technique.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile table companion. Classically it harmonises with Coq au Vin, duck breast with cherries or a simple roast beef. Equally convincing with mushroom dishes – such as risotto ai funghi porcini – or with aged Comté. Those who enjoy it on its own are equally well served.
