Tasting note
Character
Le Terroir is Adrien Renoir’s calling card – the Champagne that tells the story of the Grand Cru village of Verzy as a whole. An assemblage of equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, uncompromisingly dry as Extra Brut. Not a sparkling wine for quick effect, but one that lives from chalk, old vines and patience.
Terroir & Origin
All grapes come from Verzy, one of the 17 Grand Cru villages of Champagne, on the wooded northern edge of the Montagne de Reims. The subsoil is belemnite-rich chalk – cool, chalky, water-retentive – which gives the wine its saline tension. The vines were planted between 1961 and 1971. The designation L23/22 indicates the base: vintage 2023, supplemented by approximately one-fifth reserve wine from 2022, aged in the foudre.
Grape variety & Vinification
50 % Pinot Noir for body and red fruit, 50 % Chardonnay for freshness and length. Around one-fifth of the base wines ferments and matures in wooden barrel, the rest in steel tank; approximately 20 % reserve wine adds depth. After around 24 months on the lees, it is dosed with only 0.8 g/l – Extra Brut. Adrien Renoir works organically (certified 2020), ferments spontaneously and disgorges without sulphur addition.
Food Pairing
A versatile food companion: oysters and scallops, grilled turbot, but also Poulet de Bresse or a mature Comté. The blend of freshness and Pinot structure carries seafood as well as light meats.
